Someone thinks it is sexy to go to the trouble to do that, weird how some cultures view things.

It was tradition in Ancient China for women to have their feet like that. It was so women had to rely on men. Very sad, once you think about it.

It was not so women 'had to rely on men' that is a typical american eqotistical comment. It's always about you, isnt it?

Men in ancient China thought small feet were more attractive and feminine than big feet. Women in (mostly) rural poor areas of China did this voluntarily for social reasons.

All of 5 seconds on Wikipedia:
"This was initially a common practice only in the wealthiest parts of China, particularly in areas around northern China. However, by the late Qing Dynasty, foot binding had become popular among people of all social classes except the poorest, who needed able-bodied women to work the fields."
Yeah... only the rural poor areas.

I love the internet: where wikipedia is a viable source of information and people take their arguments about international social ethics to the personal level (their own), often without any sort of real experience.

it should be noted that, while many Han Chinese did bind their feet during the Qing dynasty, none of the Manchurian women (Qing was a Manchurian dynasty) did. In fact Manchurian women thought it was disgusting. Footbinding was NEVER popular in poor, rural areas as it would have prevented women from working, simply unfeasible for the poor.

if you guys are really interested in this stuff, some interesting reads on and around the subject are "A Daughter of Han" by Ning Lao T'ai-t'ai. "Emperor of China: Self-Portrait of K'ang-Hsi" by Jonathan Spence (K'ang-Hsi was the first emperor of Qing) and finally "The Search for Modern China" by Jonathan Spence.

There is NO doubt that this woman is in horrible pain because of foot binding. Voluntary or not, twisted desires are never something to brag about in a culture. In this case desiring to inflict pain and unnatural damage to oneself in order to encourage the favor of another person. Literally twisted. Youth is fleeting and whatever benefits came from this practice, rest assured that permanently breaking your feet for any reason leaves you a cripple forever! Every culture (and sub-culture)has pros and cons... gonna have to go with con on this one! I just hope she has some really good pain medication.

Egads, the crap (some) men (have) force(d) on (some) women -- just because the creeps had foot fetishes!!!
Seriously, I read an article recently that traced it to that--the men wanted the womens feet like because once the feet were in "shape" they provided a ...shall we say "pocket"...

Although I do not agree with this idea of fashion, the woman does seem to be quite proud of her feet.

We are quite strange in our able to make the painful and odd into the joy of high fashion.

I would think that her feet being quite useless would be a mark of high "Culture" and proof of her nobility and over shadow any physical pain. Today it might be liken to buying a house or car one can't afford.

I might even think that she did not bind her feet for a "man" but to show up other woman in an attempt to prove herself among her pears.

I know that women don't get all dressed up to impressed men, most men really don't care about fashion. but to impress other women.

Don't believe me? Ask a man why he picked his belt or wallet or tie. He is apt to say his mom or wife bought it for him.

For men, sex is really what they are taking into account. Fashion is an ofter thought to that.

Aside from men, in todays world this same lady would ran out and got a nice large set of fake boobs.

Again not to impress men but other women.

But I'm sure she would blame it on a man.

This way women can distort their own bodies in a narcissistic battle of who is prettier while commiserating on how men have forced them do it.
